New Episode of MedTech POV Podcast: Michael Minogue, Former AdvaMed Chair and Former Head of Abiomed Shares His Medtech Journey and Leadership Values

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the newest episode of the Medtech POV podcast, AdvaMed President and CEO Scott Whitaker sat down for a wide-ranging discussion with Michael Minogue, former Chairman, President, and CEO of Abiomed. Prior to leading Abiomed for 18 years, Minogue served as an officer in the U.S. Army and spent 11 years at General Electric Healthcare. During his career he served on the Board of Directors of LifeCell, Bioventus, and the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC), and he founded MedTechVets, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that connects veterans with industry mentors to find careers in the medtech industry.

During the conversation, Minogue highlighted a recurring theme that drove his career at General Electric Healthcare and Abiomed: Patients.

“I think what I loved about health care was as I got out of the military, and as we want other veterans getting out, we want medtech to be the home for these veterans. It’s because you serve a purpose greater than yourself,” Minogue said. “You’re helping patients 24 by 7 all over the world. At Abiomed, we had something we called Patients First. That’s the truest form of giving back to people, helping people, because you’re always going to do what’s in the best interest of the patient.”

He went on to say, “you want every patient to be treated as if they’re a family member or friend. And you’re able to do that in medtech. And at Abiomed, our patients sometimes are family members or friends, right? We just go that path, and that gives us the integrity to have a culture that is greater than any individual and greater than any product. And we always see the patient outcome as the ultimate success.”

The lively conversation, encompassing Minogue’s military career to his decades of work in the medtech industry, highlights his entrepreneurial work ethic, leadership values, the lifesaving innovation the medtech industry is responsible for, and the ongoing work to help transitioning servicemembers find meaningful careers in the health care industry.
