AdvaMed Statement on Administration’s Expanded Investment in COVID Testing

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed)—the world’s largest trade association for medical technology and diagnostics companies in the world—released the following statement from President and CEO Scott Whitaker on today’s announcement by the Biden Administration of its plan to expand diagnostic testing:

“We commend President Biden and the administration for their commitment to expanding federal investment in COVID-19 testing supplies. Testing is absolutely a critical part of bringing this pandemic under control, which is why our diagnostics companies, from Day One, have collaborated closely with the federal government to continue rapidly developing and manufacturing at scale the quality diagnostic and serology tests we need to save lives. Even with increasing numbers of vaccinations, testing for screening, surveillance, diagnosis and epidemiological study will continue to be a critical part of our nation’s, and the world’s, ongoing response to COVID-19.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the diagnostics industry has manufactured and shipped more than 370 million molecular COVID-19 tests to hospitals, laboratories, and other sites in the U.S., based on data in the AdvaMed COVID-19 Testing Supply Registry. Further, the industry is currently shipping millions of antigen and serology/antibody tests each week with tens of millions of more tests per month anticipated in the near future.

“AdvaMed and our member companies are working closely with the Biden administration to further strengthen the industry’s massive testing mobilization,” Whitaker continued. “Whether we use at-home, point-of-care or lab-based tests, it is important that people have access to quality, reliable testing. As proactive partners with the administration and Congress, the diagnostics industry will continue to meet the challenges presented by COVID-19.”
