AdvaMed State Policy Briefing – Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) – Environmental Sustainability and Recycling in Medtech

This week, in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, AdvaMed President and CEO Scott Whitaker underscored the critical importance of passing a tax provision that allows small businesses to deduct their research and development expenses in the year the expense was incurred. AdvaMed, the world’s largest trade association representing medical technology companies, supports the provision, which until 2022, encouraged small companies and startups to continue investing in R&D, the lifeblood of these primarily pre-commercial companies.

Today, Zach Rothstein, Executive Director of AdvaMedDx, testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Subcommittee on Health during a hearing on diagnostic test regulation and FDA’s proposed laboratory developed test (LDT) rule.

Former U.S. Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina joined me on the Medtech POV podcast to share his perspective on policy and leadership. In testimony today before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Small Business, Dr. Lishan Aklog urged Congress and the executive branch to consider the dire consequences for patients and medtech innovation if proposals further regulating the most prevalent method of sterilizing medical technology go forward without significant changes.

Today, AdvaMed, the Medtech Association, announced Kelvyn Cullimore, President and CEO of BioUtah, will serve as the next chair of the State Medtech Alliance (SMTA). The Alliance is a consortium of state and regional trade associations representing their local medical technology companies. Cullimore succeeds Dean Paranicas, who previously served as President and CEO of the  HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ).
