Advancing Access to Patient Care: The Importance of Advocacy on the Hill

Medtech Showcase and Reception

On June 11, AdvaMed hosted its second annual Medtech Showcase and Reception on Capitol Hill since the pandemic. Held in the historic Cannon Caucus Room, this event brought member companies’ transformative medical technology directly to policymakers shaping American health care. This year’s event convened 37 companies that demonstrated over 40 medtech innovations that are advancing health outcomes and our health care system today.

Members of Congress, legislative staff, and patient advocates had the opportunity to touch and see firsthand the products that improve and save lives every day. From advanced surgical tools to artificial intelligence (AI) powered diagnostics, this year’s showcase highlighted the expanse and versatility of today’s medtech ecosystem.

Similar to a science fair, this event served a deeper purpose than exhibiting new technology. It was created for education. With the current national spotlight on American health, informing policymakers on how and why medtech is the backbone of our health care system is more critical now than ever before. The showcase provided an essential opportunity to explain what makes medtech unique and why our member companies deserve a seat at the table in policy conversations.

Tim Schmid, the executive vice president and worldwide chairman of medtech at Johnson & Johnson and a showcase participant, stated, “Clearly, at a time with so much change under way in Washington, having a voice that really advocates for greater access for our innovations really matters. The end of the day, our industry exists for patients.”

For AdvaMed members, participation in this showcase is more than just an opportunity to display their devices; it’s a chance to advocate for crucial measures directly impacting Americans with policymakers. Several member company leaders swapped stories of patient care and expressed the real-world impact congressional decisions can have.

“AdvaMed is here working on coding, coverage, payment, regulatory … It’s impossible not to see how much we matter when you walk around this room. There is no way that any single company would be able to advocate on their own behalf, on all of them,” said Tracy MacNeal, president and CEO of Materna Medical.

AdvaMed plays a unique role as the unified voice of medical technology, and events like these are a powerful extension of our core mission. We hope to continue fostering meaningful conversation between innovators and decision-makers to continue improving health outcomes and create a better future for our nation’s health care.
