Second Annual Medical Technology Veterans Program to Kick Off in D.C.
Fourteen veterans to participate in year-long initiative that provides training and mentorship to help transition to jobs in the medical technology industry.
Washington, DC (September 17, 2013)- The Medical Technology Veterans Program (MVP) announced today the second annual MVP Boot Camp will take place during the 2013 Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) MedTech Conference on September 22-24 in Washington, D.C.
The MVP program is a year-long career training and mentorship program designed to help veterans entering the civilian workforce transition into jobs in the medical technology (medtech) and diagnostic industries. During the 2013 MVP Boot Camp, 14 veterans from across the country will participate in a variety of meetings, including an overview of employment opportunities in the industry, career building skills, mentoring, military skills translation, networking sessions, resume reviews and interactive interview techniques. This is the second year of the successful program.
“There are currently more than 150,000 returning veterans entering the civilian workforce. We are proud to announce the second annual MVP boot camp, which provides veterans with on-site one-on-one training, skills and networking opportunities to launch careers in the thriving medtech industry,” said Michael R. Minogue, chairman, president and CEO of Abiomed, chairman of the MVP program and a veteran of Operation Desert Storm. “The knowledge gained from this boot camp, paired with the MVP portal, which is open to all veterans, provides these servicemen and women an online arsenal of training and networking resources designed to help them navigate the medtech industry.”
The United States is a global leader in the medical device industry, which directly and indirectly supports nearly 2 million jobs. Through the MVP, each participant is assigned a mentor — veterans who have already transitioned into successful civilian roles at medtech companies. This year’s mentors represent job functions ranging from sales and customer support to operations, human resources, manufacturing and R&D, including Abiomed, Haemonetics, Edwards Lifesciences, St. Jude Medical and Baxter. Mentors will provide advice and guidance throughout the transition process.
“The MVP program has been set up by successful medtech professionals who themselves had made the transition from military to civilian careers. The program’s mission is to help veterans achieve their civilian professional goals in the medtech industry by offering the necessary skills and guidance from longtime industry leaders,” said Stephen J. Ubl, president and CEO of AdvaMed. “We see this vibrant and innovative industry as being a prime setting for servicemen and women to find meaningful, long-term careers, and the MVP as a great starting point for these opportunities.”
The 14 veterans participating in this year’s boot camp represent the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps and live in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Tennessee and Virginia. About 2.8 million veterans have served in the military since September 11, 2001. The unemployment rate for veterans nationwide is just over seven percent.
