AdvaMed Praises Formal Approval of WTO Information Technology Agreement

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stephen J. Ubl, president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), issued the following statement on the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) expansion of the 1997 Information Technology Agreement (ITA):

“AdvaMed is pleased that the WTO’s General Assembly formally approved expansion of the 1997 Information Technology Agreement (ITA), which will eliminate burdensome tariffs on $10 billion of U.S. medical technology exports.

“The success of this initiative demonstrates that the WTO remains an important avenue for multilateral trade liberalization, particularly when countries come together in the spirit of compromise. We appreciate that over 50 countries agreed to participate, and we particularly welcome those countries – such as Taiwan and Thailand – that recently notified the WTO, thereby ensuring that the 90 percent threshold for implementation would be achieved.”
