AdvaMed Praises "First-Ever" U.S.-Brazil Trade Package

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) today issued the following statement from President and CEO Scott Whitaker on the newly concluded United States-Brazil Trade Package:

"We congratulate President Trump, his administration, and the government of Brazil for successfully concluding negotiations on this first-ever trade agreement between the two countries in modern history. This is a meaningful win for our commercial relationship and is a significant step forward in terms of transparency, regulatory streamlining, ethical business practices, and customs modernization – all to the mutual benefit of both nations. This agreement will also build momentum for the negotiation of additional commitments in the future that would further increase the medtech industry’s market access and patient access to live-saving and life-improving medical technologies. We urge the Brazilian Congress to approve the package as expeditiously as possible.”

The agreement includes new provisions that are expected to reduce non-tariff barriers on medical devices, fostering greater patient access to the latest medical technology innovations and further regulatory harmonization.

Achieving this agreement was made possible through the leadership of U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and his team, their work with the government of Brazil in the context of the Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation, the U.S.-Brazil Commercial Dialogue led by the U.S. National Economic Council, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Brazilian Casa Civil and Ministry of Economy and via AdvaMed’s advocacy and partnership with the Brazil-U.S. Business Council, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry, the U.S.-Brazil CEO Forum, the Brazilian MedTech Alliance (ABIIS) and others.
