AdvaMed Congratulates Robert Lighthizer on Confirmation as U.S. Trade Representative

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) issued the following statement today from Ralph Ives, executive vice president, global strategy, and analysis, regarding Senate confirmation of United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer:

“AdvaMed congratulates Mr. Lighthizer on his confirmation as the new U.S. trade representative.

“His record of public service, including as chief counsel and staff director for the Senate Finance Committee, as deputy trade representative in the Reagan administration, in private practice and in negotiating bilateral agreements, make him extraordinarily well qualified for his new role.

“President Trump has stressed the need for a new approach to U.S. trade policy that focuses on America’s economic growth and U.S. workers. Mr. Lighthizer’s experience in government and the private sector make clear that trade policy will be a top priority for the administration.

“AdvaMed strongly supports trade policies that open and maintain access to foreign markets. We look forward to working with Mr. Lighthizer and the Trump administration on ways to improve worldwide patient access to life-changing innovations from the U.S. medical technology industry, which will save and improve more patients’ lives, create more good-paying American jobs, and grow our economy.

“With approximately 60 percent of the global medical technology market outside the United States, trade policy plays a critical role in improving patient outcomes around the world by allowing greater access to the life-saving and life-improving medical devices and diagnostics our member companies provide.”
