AdvaMed Commends Senators Burr, Bennet & Hatch on Breakthrough Technologies Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Stephen J. Ubl, president and CEO of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), issued the following statement today following introduction in the Senate of legislation to expedite FDA approval of breakthrough medical technologies:

“AdvaMed commends Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) for introducing this important legislation which will help patients and physicians have more timely access to breakthrough medical technologies.

“While FDA has made great strides in recent years to improve the efficiency and predictability of the medical technology review process, more can be done to ensure that the most cutting-edge innovations – those that have the potential to provide the greatest patient benefit – are made available to patients and physicians, something the agency acknowledges as well.

“This legislation will help create a more seamless and efficient pathway for breakthrough medical technologies, building on initiatives already underway within FDA and called for under AdvaMed’s Innovation Agenda.

“We look forward to working with members of Congress, FDA and other key stakeholders to move this legislation forward and to addressing the additional payment challenges that are increasingly preventing the diffusion of these breakthrough technologies after FDA approval.”
