Global Ethics & Compliance Initiatives

AdvaMed works to facilitate ethical interactions between companies and health care professionals (HCPs) globally. Ethical interactions enhance patient access to the safe and effective use of medical technologies, promote innovation and the ongoing development of advanced medical technologies, facilitate open and transparent business environments free from the high costs of corruption, and ensure that medical decision-making is made in the best interest of patients. In this endeavor toward ethical MedTech worldwide, AdvaMed and its member companies actively launch, lead and support global distributor capacity building programs, multi-national cooperatives and in-country initiatives across the world.

Global Distributor Capacity Building

To ensure and improve ongoing patient and clinician access to innovative, reliable and effective medical technologies, it is often necessary for medical device and diagnostics companies to engage third parties to assist with marketing, sales and distribution of advanced medical technology overseas. These third parties may include distributors, wholesalers, distribution or sales agents, marketing agents, brokers, commissionary commercial agents and independent sales representatives.

  • The AdvaMed Global Distributor Center offers MedTech distributors in-person and online opportunities for compliance guidance, training and registration.
  • The Distributor Guidance page provides MedTech companies with distributor relationship guidance and tools that are jointly developed by AdvaMed and MedTech Europe as part of an ongoing commitment to provide ethical guidance on appropriate industry interactions.
  • The APEC Distributor Compliance Portal provides virtual resources to support MedTech distributor implementation of ethical guidance crafted for small and medium sized enterprises within the Asia-Pacific region. The Portal’s resources were developed by an AdvaMed-led capacity building team of over 60 expert organizations.
  • The Latin American Implementation Toolkit offers a wide array of resources to inform Latin American MedTech organizations’ efforts to strengthen ethical business practices.

Multi-national Cooperation

Given the increasingly global nature of the medical device and diagnostics industry, AdvaMed and its member companies have launched, lead and driven multi-national cooperative initiatives to facility greater ethics and compliance worldwide. These cooperative activities bring together government representatives, industry associations and MedTech companies from across Asia, Europe and the Americas to ensure patients have access to safe and effective medical devices of the highest quality at the lowest costs possible.

  • The Global Medical Technology Alliance is co-chaired by AdvaMed and MedTech Europe. Its members are national and regional associations which represent MedTech companies that cumulatively develop and manufacture 85% of the world's medical devices, diagnostics and equipment. The Alliance provides a forum for the development and advocacy of policies that support innovation in medical technology to address patients' healthcare needs worldwide.  The GMTA Global Compliance Network provides thought leadership and resources to promote harmonization and implementation of codes of ethics worldwide.
  • The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Ethics for APEC SMEs Initiative is the world’s largest public-private partnership dedicated to strengthening ethical business practices in the medical technology sector. Launched by AdvaMed as industry co-chair in 2010, this partnership has successfully extended high-standard codes of ethics to 31 MedTech associations across 19 economies which collectively represent over 10,000 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The Initiative is overseen by the U.S. Department of Commerce and supported by an AdvaMed-led capacity building platform with an expert team of over 60 organizations.
  • The Inter-American Coalition for Business Ethics in the Medical Technology Sector serves as the first and only initiative across the Western Hemisphere to strengthen ethical business practices for all MedTech stakeholders. Launched in 2017 by AdvaMed and ALDIMED (Latin America Medical Technology Associations) and recognized at the 2018 Summit of the Americas and Americas Business Dialogue in Peru, the Coalition convenes all 17 major MedTech associations across the Americas in the pursuit and implementation of aligned codes of ethics. Altogether, the Coalition represents nearly 3,000 MedTech companies.

In-Country Initiatives

MedTech companies can serve the interests of patients through beneficial collaborations with HCPs to advance medical technologies, enhance the safe and effective use of medical technologies, encourage research and education, and foster charitable donations and giving. To ensure that these collaborative relationships meet the highest ethical standards, they must be conducted with appropriate transparency and in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and government guidance.
