“The Place To Be”
AdvaMed’s 11th annual conference and exhibition travelled across the country in 2017 to San Jose, the heart of California’s Silicon Valley and the West Coast hub of start-ups, digital health and business development. This year’s conference also marked the debut of the event’s new name – The MedTech Conference, powered by AdvaMed – to reinforce its established role as the premier global summit for medical technology industry leaders. It was our best and largest annual conference ever, with over 2,700 attendees representing over 1,000 companies and stakeholder groups from 30 countries.
This year the conference also featured its largest-ever exhibit hall with 180 exhibitors displaying their latest products and services, and set a new record of hosting over 1,500 business development meetings – a 20% increase over the previous year!
Stakeholders from all facets of the medtech industry – small, medium and large companies; local, national and international governments; academia; and the financial community – again were drawn by the value-added offerings that only AdvaMed’s annual conference provides. These included dozens of educational panels addressing key regulatory, reimbursement, legal and compliance, business development and finance, and international issues, and compelling topics ranging from cybersecurity and digital health to Brexit and value-based care.
For the third year in a row, the conference also hosted the MedTech Innovator showcase and awards finals, including 50 early-stage companies competing for over $600,000 in prizes and a grand prize winner – Day Zero Diagnostics – selected by live audience vote.
Conference highlights included a distinguished lineup of plenary speakers who shared their unique vision and insights on the future of health care, leadership and innovation, including: FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb; Regina Dugan, vice president of engineering, Building 8, at Facebook; Joe Montana, Hall of Fame NFL quarterback and co-founder of venture capital firm Liquid 2 Ventures; and health IT experts Joshua Newman, chief medical officer at Salesforce, and David Brailer, managing partner and CEO of health care investment firm Health Evolution Partners.
The conference also featured a reprise of our always-popular FDA Town Hall, led by CDRH Director Jeffrey Shuren, and a CMS Town Hall led by Demetrios Kouzoukas, CMS principal deputy administrator and director of the Center for Medicare. Noteworthy presentations by actress and cancer survivor Shannen Doherty, and spinal cord injury survivor Ian Burkhart, also provided powerful examples of how medtech can save and improve people’s lives.
In one of the most moving and engaging moments of all, The MedTech Conference honored former Beckman Coulter CEO and Chairman Jack Wareham with the 2017 AdvaMed Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to improving patient care and health care system efficiency through innovation in the field of clinical laboratory testing.
Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to attend next year when The MedTech Conference 2018 will take place in Philadelphia on Sept. 24-26!
