The MedTech Conference — 2018

“You Need To Be There”

AdvaMed’s 12th annual conference travelled to Philadelphia in 2018, affording the perfect opportunity to showcase the mid-Atlantic region’s innovative and dynamic medtech entrepreneurs, start-ups, investors and multinational market leaders, while once again gathering the entire industry. The MedTech Conference was our biggest and best annual conference ever, achieving double-digit percentage growth, with over 3,000 attendees representing over 1,000 companies and stakeholder groups from 35 countries.

This year the conference also set a new record of hosting 1,680 business development meetings – a 17 percent increase over the previous year!

Attendees included stakeholders from all facets of the medtech industry – small, medium and large companies; local, national and international governments; academia; and the financial community – who were once again drawn by the value-added offerings that only AdvaMed’s annual conference provides. These offerings included over 30 educational panels addressing key regulatory, reimbursement, legal and compliance, business development and finance, and international issues, and compelling topics ranging from the new European medical technology regulations to Brexit, and from cybersecurity and digital health to value-based care.

For the fourth year in a row, the conference also hosted the MedTech Innovator showcase and awards finals, including 50 early-stage companies competing for over $500,000 in prizes and a grand prize winner – Sana Health – selected by live audience vote.

Conference highlights included a distinguished lineup of plenary speakers, including former President George W. Bush; former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair; and legendary NCAA championship basketball coaches Jay Wright of Villanova and John Calipari of the University of Kentucky. In addition, a compelling plenary panel discussion on the future of health care delivery was led by experts Ashley McEvoy (worldwide chairman, medical devices, at Johnson & Johnson), Dan Hilferty (president and CEO of Independence Blue Cross and immediate past chairman of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association), Stephen Klasko (president of Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health), and Kevin Mahoney (chief administrative officer for the University of Pennsylvania Health System and co-director of the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation).

The conference also featured a reprise of our always-popular FDA Town Hall, led by CDRH Director Jeffrey Shuren, and a CMS Town Hall session led by several of the agency’s departmental directors. Meanwhile, AdvaMed President and CEO Scott Whitaker’s plenary address spotlighted eight-year-old Ryan Steele, a thriving survivor of thoracic insufficiency syndrome who provided a powerful and moving example of how medtech can save and improve people’s lives.

In one of the most moving and engaging moments of all, The MedTech Conference honored former Baxter Chairman and CEO Vernon Loucks with the 2018 AdvaMed Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the health care industry and to improving patient care.

Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to attend next year when The MedTech Conference will take place in Boston on Sept. 23-25, 2019!
