The on-field cardiac arrest of football player Damar Hamlin raised the profile of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs). An AED helped save his life.
Many of us have little knowledge or experience using these devices. After the Hamlin case, The Washington Post published a helpful piece about what an AED is and how to use one.
Contrary to a misconception, an AED is for everyone to use, not solely medical professionals. The machine tells the user what to do and what not to do. It’s an ingenious, incredibly useful piece of medical technology.
During American Heart Month, we should all take a few minutes to familiarize ourselves with AEDs. We may be in a position someday to use one to save a life.
