"Vendor Days" Help Build Increased Knowledge and Communication Between Industry and FDA

The FDA Office of Device Evaluation's (ODE) Vendor Day Program provides scientific reviewers an opportunity to examine industry display tables including devices and other items including videotapes and simulators.

Vendor Days are purely educational, not promotional, and therefore a display and product demonstration highlighting the scientific basis for the product is what FDA expects the companies to present for the benefit of the attendees. Moreover, Vendor Day programs also help develop improved communications between industry and FDA and provides both groups with a better understanding of the health issues involved with medical device technology.

FDA’s Office of Device Evaluation has contacted AdvaMed and asked us to coordinate several Vendor Days in 2008 (see table). Seven to 10 companies participate on each day. A typical Vendor Day runs from 9:00 to 12:00 am and is held at the FDA’s offices in Rockville, MD.

An AF Ablation/Surgical Cardiac Ablation Day, held in February, was successful and attracted more than 100 FDA staffers. Participating companies displayed devices, allowing “hands-on” demonstrations of devices and answered technical questions posed by FDA staff.
