- BD VOLUNTEER SERVICE TRIP PROGRAM
When possible, BD joins together its resources to allow for greater impact, and the associate Volunteer Service Trip Program typifies the successful combination of cash, product and BD volunteers. BD associates have the opportunity to apply for and participate in Company-sponsored volunteer trips that address global health issues.
In 2005, BD launched this innovative program by collaborating with Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB), to help address HIV/AIDS in Zambia. In 2006, BD associates returned to Zambia with CMMB and worked at four rural health care facilities
On-going positive results of these two volunteer trips are evident in investments the two Zambian hospitals have attracted due to improved lab practices:
- Mwandi has qualified for government support for anti-retroviral therapies (ARTs)
- Chilonga is nearing candidacy for U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) funding.
In March 2007, 12 BD associate volunteers worked at two rural healthcare facilities in Ghana to combat high infant and maternal mortality rates. BD partnered with Direct Relief International on this trip.
The BD Matching Gift Program The Company matches monetary donations and volunteer time for eligible individual BD associates and retirees to a wide range of nonprofit public charities that meet program guidelines. Thousands of gifts are matched each year to support hundreds of nonprofit efforts in the areas of health, environmental protection, arts and culture, social welfare, education and more. For fiscal year 2006, the program funded over $958,650 to such organizations.
The Henry P. Becton Community Service Award Program This program- named for BD Director Emeritus Henry P. Becton, Sr. - recognizes excellence and creativity in community involvement on the part of BD associates and retirees by making financial contributions in the awardees' names to the organizations for which they volunteer. In 2006, BD awarded grants to 13 nonprofit organizations around the world.
Community Service Eligible U.S. associates are encouraged to volunteer for up to 2 full days per year of paid time off for community service covered under this program by helping in not-for-profit:
