2006 Accomplishments
AdvaMed has forged working relationships with the blood collection community and developed a strategic plan to address the inadequate reimbursement of blood and blood products. The plan addresses the need for continued hospital education efforts that highlight the importance of correct billing for blood products and urges CMS to consolidate and clarify its blood billing procedures.
Working in coalition, the Blood Sector was able to obtain consolidated and clarified billing and coding regulations, progress toward a new blood producer price index to track blood product prices in the hospital environment, and realize improvements in outpatient reimbursement for blood. We also sponsored a comprehensive hospital education campaign, run by the American
Association of Blood Banks, to correct billing and coding issues. In addition, we collaborated with the blood organizations to address harmonization of clinical trial requirements for devices used in the manufacture of blood and blood products.
